Our skin, (epidermis)the outer covering of our bodies, is often referred to as the largest organ that we have.
Without our hide our muscles, bones and organs would fall all over the place and our blood would leak out all over everything that we came into contact with.
This is the part of our body that interacts with the environment that each of us are in and protects the body against pathogens.
The epidermis is made up of many layers and components. One of the first things that you notice when you look at a person is their colour, this is because the epidermis contains a pigmentation, the colour varies from one part of the world to an other.
The darker a person's appearance only indicates that they, or their ancestors, came from an area of the world where the sun was particularly strong and there was little protection from it. It is natures’ way of adapting to the environment and providing protection. The darker the pigmentation the hotter the climate, the paler, or the lack of colouring, the lack of sun, or, a colder area of the world.
This outer covering of a body, also often called the hide or pelt, is often covered on the outside with hair, which aids in the insulation of the body. On some animals the hair grows quite dense and fine and is called fur. Animals with fur covering their bodies have been sort and prized by mankind since the dawn of time. The hide on many living creatures varies a lot and reflects the environment that the creature lives in.
Man has learnt how to use the hides or pelts of many of the animals of this world for many purposes, example, Clothing (trousers, jackets, hats, shoes etc.)
This organ of the body performs the following functions: -
Aging
As a person ages their epidermis becomes thinner and is more easily damaged. intensifying this effect is the decreasing ability for it to heal itself as a person ages.
Aging of the epidermis is caused by a fall in elasticity, also because it receives less blood flow and lower gland activity.
Disease
There are many different diseases of the epidermis. The branch of medicine that. studies and treats them is called: Dermatology.
The ailments and diseases include, (but is NOT a complete list) are:-
In this day and age one of the most dangerous disease that we face is skin cancer.. If untreated this disease can be fatal. Most heath professionals strongly suggest that we should all take precautions to prevent this disease, these include: -
Warning and recommendation
As you can see from the little that I have recorded above our epidermis is very important to out wellbeing. We should take great care of our outer covering.
The first impression we make on a person when we meet them will depend on how much care we have been taking of ourselves. Also how we feel about life that what is going on around us is very much reflected in our epidermis and is on display 24 hours a day seven days a week.
There have been many products developed to help us look after ourselves so that we look good, feel great, and, we always make a good impression on those we meet.
