Have you had diabetes for years without knowing?
Being told that you have diabetes is often frightening, confusing and full of many unknowns. When first diagnosed there are all the initial questions and uncertainties about diet, medications and effects on lifestyle.
You may have had this medical condition for many years without realising it. Not everyone has the symptoms, which include: =
- feeling tired and lacking energy,
- feeling thirsty,
- going to the toilet often,
- getting infections frequently,
- getting infections which are hard to heal,
- poor eyesight or blurred vision,
- often feeling hungry.
If you have these symptoms consult your doctor as soon as you can.
This disease is on its way to becoming the world’s number 1 health problem. There appears to be an epidemic of this disease, already, in some countries half of the adult population has diabetes
This medical condition is due to the body not being able to produce enough insulin to use. Insulin gets the sugar out of the blood and into the body’s muscles where it is used to provide energy for the body. If there is not enough insulin or if the insulin does not do its job properly, diabetes develops.
There is two types of the disease, children and young adults develop this condition because their bodies cannot make enough insulin, this is known as type 1.
Type 2 which is the most common type, is the result of insulin not working properly and usually affects people over the age of 40. Overeating, overweight, stress and not exercising enough are important lifestyle factors, which can lead to this type of diabetes. If there is someone in the family with the condition then that is an added factor.
Control of the disease is done by injecting insulin in to the body for type 1 patients and, taking pills and careful watch of the diet normally controls the type 2 variety. However, some times type 2 is not controlled as completely as we hope and it progresses through to type 1 and the use of injections of insulin.
If untreated, or poorly treated, diabetes can affect the eyesight, brain functions, and various extremities of the body. The main reason that limbs are amputated is this disease, the complete lose of sight is another common affect, plus, heart disease and break down of various organs of the body.
Sufferers of this disease must take good care of themselves, what they do, what they eat, how they live.
Over the last 100 years our knowledge of the illness and how to treat it has increased. 100 years ago the diet advice was ‘limitation of all components of the diet’. This meant that on some days the patient was not eating at all, leading to malnutrition.
In the 1920s doctors began recommending a high fat diet, they knew that fat did not break down and become blood sugar, they overlooked the fact that fat damaged the heart.
To eat sugar, or anything sweet, was a big No No. Since the 1970s we have gained more knowledge on this subject. It has been found that the same weight of some basic foods had the same affect on the blood sugar levels as the same weight of sugar. An interesting side issue is that ice cream had a lesser affect.
Carbohydrates are now looked upon as being helpful in the diet for a diabetic, but not too much of them. In fact, providing that they exercise control on their eating, a diabetic can eat just about anything in moderation.
Today, our knowledge of this disease is increasing at a fast rate. There are many research projects into this disease being conducted all around the world. I have even seen it reported in the paper that a ‘cure’ will soon be found.
All countries have, or are, developing many educational programmes, and support groups are to be found everywhere. Ask and you will be helped.
This is a complex medical condition which is not the same for every person and will not be treated in the same way.
What we have found is that it is of utmost importance for the diet of a sufferer of this condition to be based on good cellular nutrition principles.
Most diabetics have to lose some weight. Many have tried and failed in the past because of many different reasons. Such reasons as that the diet tasted awful, was hard to prepare, cost a lot, and, did not appear to work because they always felt hungry.

Margaret has written, One day I was reflecting on how my family has been struggling with diabetes over many generations. I thought about the toll it has taken on our family and decided to do a website dealing with how the
family is involved.
I decided to call it, your family and diabetes, since dealing with diabetes is a family affair.
