Is your digestion system working?
Digestion is the breaking down of food by the chemicals in the body into a form that the body can use and absorb into the blood stream. Once the food reaches the stomach it is further processed by the mechanical churning and mixing with enzymes. The process normally starts with the smell of the food which sets the digestive juices flowing in readiness to transport the food once it comes into the mouth.
Food is the fuel of our bodies, it gives bodies the energy and substances that we need to think and do things. The digestion system breaks the food down into a size that the various parts of our bodies can utilise fully and absorb into the blood.
This tract, the digestive tract, down which the food(fuel) flows, is made up of numerous organs and intestines which perform many different functions to prepare the fuel for use and absorption by the body.
The blood carries the vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, proteins and fats to the parts of the body that needs them. The parts of the food that the body cannot use are discharged as waste from the body. This whole process does take many hours to complete and the food to be fully digested.
All these organs, intestines, vessels etc., must be kept clean so that they can perform their tasks perfectly. If they become clogged or blocked by too much fat or the wrong type of food we will experience malfunctions of the intestine and become ill, often seriously, until our bodies can clear themselves of the blockage.
It stands to reason that a good balanced nutritious diet is what our bodies need. If the body is stressed, or put under pressure through travelling, too much work leading to tiredness, or, the wrong food etc. then the digestive system can be affected and malfunction.
